England midfielder Gareth Barry’s participation in the World Cup finals appears to be in doubt, as he waits to discover the extent of an ankle injury picked up in Manchester City’s 1-0n defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday night.
Barry was initially diagnosed with a minor sprain by club doctors, but he is awaiting a full diagnosis from a specialist on Friday after undergoing a scan.
Barry’s loss would be a huge blow for England coach Capello although it could present an opportunity for the likes of Joe Cole, Tom Huddlestone, Scott Parker or even Owen Hargreaves to stake a claim for a place in his squad.
Barry has never played in a World Cup after missing out on selection under former coach Sven Goran Eriksson in both 2002 and 2006.
