Everton striker Wayne Rooney will meet police to discuss claims he spat towards Liverpool fans during Saturday’s Merseyside derby, but the 17-year-old England player is unlikely to face further action over the incident, a police spokesman admitted.
The police investigation followed claims made by Liverpool fans that Rooney spat in their direction in their direction during Saturday’s clash at Goodison Park ground.
“Our football liaison officer…reviewed the incident on video and Wayne will see a seniorofficer with his manager,” a Merseyside Police spokesman said.
“We are not taking it any further, although we did take the complaint seriously. It will just be a discussion and hopefully that will be the end of it,” he added.
Rooney has amde an astonishing impact in his debut season, becoming the youngest player to represent England and hailed in some quarters as the saviour of English football.
