Sven-Goran Eriksson has confirmed that Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes is a major doubt ahead of England’s next Euro 2004 Group B match against Switzerland in Coimbra on Thursday.
Scholes faces a race against the clock to get fit for the clash, which now takes on added significance following England’s last gasp defeat against France.
England led 1-0 into injury time, but two late goals from Zinedine Zidane condemned England to what had looked like an unlikely defeat, thus making Thursday’s match against the Swiss a must win game.
“He’s twisted his ankle so he won’t train today (Monday) and possibly not even tomorrow,” the England coach told the media.
“We will see on Wednesday if he will be fit to play. Gary Neville has a slight problem but will train today, and there are no other injuries.”
