American coach Bruce Arena has admitted that Freddy Adu is unlikely to make his squad for the World Cup finals.
Adu,16, was included in a New Year training camp by Arena, but the US coach believes that the finals will come too early for the youngster.
“He’s a good young player, but he’s in a little over his head at this level at this point in his career,” Arena told USA Today.
“In terms of the physical requirements, he’s not up to par in some respects. The game’s a little faster than he’s used to.”
Arena admitted that Adu’s failure to earn a regular first-team place for DC United had not helped his chances.
“He’s not a starter on his club team,” Arena opined.
“And you’re asking where he stands on making a World Cup roster.
“Without me giving you a prognosis, I’ll let you figure that out. Is he a long shot? Is he a definite? I’ll let you figure it out.”
Adu himself believes he is still in with a chance of securing a place in the squad.
“I always wanted this opportunity,” he says.
“I’m here right now, and I’m totally concentrating on this. This would be a dream come true, playing for the U.S. in the World Cup. Even if you make the team, you might not play in a game, but that’s my dream.”
