Matthias Sammer has been appointed technical director of the German Football Association (DFB).
The (DFB) decided at a meeting on Wednesday to offer the 38-year-old former international on a five-year contract.
Sammer is the former coach of Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart, will effectively take control of the country’s youth teams up to the under-20 age group.
National coach, Juergen Klinsmann, a former team-mate of Sammer, had wanted the German men’s hockey coach Bernhard Peters as the new technical director.
The DFB told Klinsmann that his job was safe provided Germany enjoyed a successful World Cup.
“The DFB aims to continue working with Juergen Klinsmann as our national team coach after the World Cup, as long as the results allow,” the statement said.
