Just 12 months after he set a new mark for the highest number of goals scored in single season in Spain, Cristiano Ronaldo’s record has been eclipsed, not once but twice.

Both he and his Barcelona nemesis, Lionel Messi, have now reached 41 for the season after the pair were on target against Sporting Gijon and Levante respectively. That’s 41 goals a piece and with five games remaining,

Elsewhere in the top ten, Wayne Rooney scored twice in Manchester United’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa, to take his tally for the season to 24. The only other player to register was Atletico Madrid’s Falcao, who scored the only goal of the game in his side’s 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano.

**Rules
Only the leading five countries – Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England – in the UEFA rankings have two as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between clubs from those countries and those of other nations.A player cannot play first in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points totals for each season.
