Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez leads the ESM Golden Shoe standings.

Luis Suarez has regained his place at the top of the ESM Golden Shoe standings. The Uruguayan striker drew a blank against WBA at the weekend, but he was on target in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Everton in midweek.

Competition at the top of the standings is fierce with Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo one goal behind Suarez, although his chances of overcoming that deficit were not helped by the red card he received in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao. The prolific Portuguese will now serve a three-match suspension.

In third place in the standings is Diego Costa – the Atletico Madrid striker notched his 20th goal of what has been a breakthrough season in his side’s 4-0 win over Real Sociedad. Sociedad’s Antoine Griezmann drew a blank on Sunday, but the hat-trick he scored last Monday night against Elche, propelled him up to joint 4th in the standings.

Elsewhere, there were goals for Heerenveen’s Alfred Finnbogason and PSG’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while three goals in his last two matches resulted in Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge making an appearance in the top ten for the first time this season.

Rules

Only the leading five countries – Spain, Italy, Germany, England and Portugal – in the UEFA rankings have two as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between clubs from those countries and those of other nations.A player cannot play first in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points totals for each season.
