“The surgery is over and thank God everything went well. What Luis had wasn’t as serious as we thought,” Suarez’s mother, Sandra Diaz, told the AP.
Further encouraging news from Saurez’s sister, who said the striker is expected to be out for 2-3 weeks.
“The problem is that these days he won’t be able to play, and will only be able to do physiotherapy,” Giovanna Suarez said.
Uruguay plays its first match at the World Cup against Costa Rica on June 14. The team will then face England on June 19 and Italy on June 24.
The Uruguay Football Association released a statement following his surgery in MontevideO saying they were confident the 27-year-old will recover from the routine procedure in time for the finals.
“Yesterday, Wednesday 21st of May, Luis Suarez suffered an intense pain in his left knee after an undergoing a normal warm up,” the statement read. “The early diagnosis was a stable injury to the external meniscus in the knee. He was examined by a scan, which confirmed a partial injury to the external meniscus. This morning the meniscus was repaired via arthroscopy at the Médica Uruguayan hospital. There was no evidence of other injuries to the knee.
“His participation at the World Cup has not been ruled out. In terms of relevant clinical history, it is worth noting hat he suffered a blow to his left knee during the last game of the Premier League season with Liverpool, which provoked a pain that subsided with rest following the end of the season.”
Suarez did not miss a game through injury for Liverpool last season.
