Chelsea’s Wayne Bridge has nominated himself as the answer to England’s left-sided problems.
Bridge, who is listed as a defender would love the chance to play ahead of Ashley Cole, the man who is keeping him out of the initial starting line up.
“I would love to play there as it would mean playing for England – I’d just love to get another chance at it,” said the Chelsea left-back.
The last time Sven Goran Eriksson played the two in tandem came against Macedonia, where the idea received mixed reviews.
“I’d like to see it happen again. I thought we played pretty well together as, when he got round me, I’d always fill in for him,” Bridge added.
Should Eriksson adopt the move a potential problem would be cover at left back with England’s only other left-sided defender, Jaime Carragher, probably starting alongside Sol Campbell in the centre of defense.
Defensive problems have hampered England’s preparations for the tournament and should John Terry fall short of fitness, England will have their sixth choice paring at centre back. Each of Rio Ferdinand, Jonathan Woodgate, Gareth Southgate and Wes Brown have been ruled out for various reasons and while Terry made the squad, he continues to struggle with a knee injury.
Despite this Campbell remains in a bullish mood.
“Hopefully John Terry can make it but Jamie Carragher and Ledley King have had great seasons and I’m pretty relaxed that whoever plays there is going to do his best for his country,” said the Arsenal defender.
“That’s all you can ask,” he added.
