The arrival of Nicky Butt at St James Park, will hasten the departure of Newcastle’s veteran midfielder Gary Speed. with the 34-year-old poised for a switch to Bolton.
Speed is expected to complete a £750,000 move to Bolton later today, clearing the way for Manchester United’s Nicky Butt to arrive on Tyneside.
“I am hopeful Gary will complete his move later today,” said Bolton manager Allardyce.
“This will be a major coup for us because I know how many clubs were interested in signing him.”
Once that deal goes through, Newcastle are expected to conclude a deal for Butt.
The 29-year-old came put in a transfer request last January but eventually decided to stay until the end of the season. However, his failure to break into the starting line-up in the latter part of the season has convinced him to sever his ties with United.
