By scoring twice in Juventus’ 3-1 win over Rapid Vienna, Alessandro Del Piero is now level with Giampiero Boniperti as the club’s all-time top scorer.
Del Piero’s goals in Wednesday’s Group A match took his tally to 182 in all competitions. He has scored 127 times in the Italian championship with the rest of his goals coming in domestic and international cup competitions.
“He is a player of great quality and a great lad as well,” Boniperti told the daily Gazzetta dello Sport.
“This head-to-head for the record has helped me to become known to a new generation who only knew me previously as a president of Juventus rather than a player and record scorer. He’s put me in the spotlight again at 77 years of age which is incredible,” he added.
Del Piero, who spent much of the season on the bench, has scored 38 goals in the Champions League and European Cup.
“I am happy to share this record with Boniperti but it is not only goals that make a great forward. Boniperti has done so much, and more, for this club,” he added.
