Huub Stevens is to leave Roda JC Kerkrade to take over at Hamburg, the Dutch club has confirmed.
Stevens succeeds Thomas Doll who was fired on Thursday after Hamburg dropped to the bottom of Bundesliga.
Dutchman Stevens, who has extensive Bundesliga coaching experience with Hertha and Schalke 04, has been appointed despite a last minute attempty by Hamburg officials to secure the services of recently sacked Bayern Munich coach Felix Magath.
A statement on the Hamburg website said Stevens, 53, would be signing a contract until the end of June 2008.
Stevens told the Hamburg website: “I’m very happy with this new job.”
