Udo Lattek is favourite to return to management in emergency with struggling Bayer Leverkusen.
Thomas Horster quit yesterday in the wake of the weekend’s 3-0 defeat by Stuttgart which left last year’s Champions League runners-up fearing once more the prospect of relegation. Horster, former German international central defender, was appointed caretaker two months ago after the dismissal of Klaus Toppmoller.
Lattek made his name by guiding Bayern Munich to the first of their four Champions Cup victories back in 1974.
Later he also won the UEFA Cup with Borussia Monchengladbach and Cup-winners Cup with Barcelona – making him the first coach to have won all three of the then major European club prizes. Lattek has spent most of the last 10 years as a soccer analyst for television and magazines.
