Felipe Scolari, who claims he was approached by Premier League club Everton overthe summer, has officially extended his contract to coach Portugal until 2006.
The Brazilian manager was offered a new deal after taking the national side to the final of Euro 2004, he’ll now be in charge for the World Cup campaign as well.
Scolari has claimed he was approached by Everton over the summer to become the Merseyside team’s manager. He didn’t mention the Toffees by name, but comments made to Portugese daily A Bola made it obvious which club he was referring to.
“I had offers from Italy, England and Spain,” said Scolari.
“I can even give an example. The team that finished 17th in the Premiership contacted me, but what can I do when a club invites me and tells me the transfer budget is 15 million euros.?”
“How can you compete with the big clubs when this will give no more than two good players?”
Scolari, who took Brazil to World Cup victory in 2002, also said he had talks with Benfica – the Portugese club eventually hired former Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni.
