Fifa president Sepp Blatter insists he has done nothing wrong and says that he was right to ignore calls for him to resign, in the wake of a crimnal investigation into his activities.
Blatter, under criminal investigation by Swiss authorities, will step down in February 2016 after 18 years at the helm of football’s governing body.
“The situation is not pleasant,” the weekly, Bunte, quoted Blatter as saying in an interview. “I am being condemned without there being any evidence for wrongdoing on my part. That is really outrageous.”
Just days after winning a fifth term, Blatter shocked seasoned Fifa watchers by announcing he would step down in the wake of corruption investigations by US and Swiss authorities. He remains in office until February’s election.
He reiterated in the interview that he had no plans to step down ahead of the February deadline, despite coordinated calls by several major sponsors last week for him to do so
“This is just an investigation, not an indictment,” he told Bunte. “I will fight until 26 February. For myself. For Fifa. I am convinced that evil will come to light and good will prevail.”
