Leeds United striker Alan Smith has been given a two-match ban for throwing a plastic water bottle into the crowd during a League Cup match against Manchester United in October.

The 23-year-old England striker pleaded guilty to a charge of improper conduct at a Football Association disciplinary hearing, the FA confirmed on its official website.

The incident took place during Leeds’ 3-2 League Cup defeat by United at Elland Road on October 28, and led to Smith being arrested by police. He was released without charge by police.

His ban is due to start on January 26, ruling him out of the league games at home to Middlesbrough and away to Aston Villa.
