Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he will select pick Yaya Toure until he apologises to the club and his team-mates for comments made by his agent.
Toure, 33, has made one appearance for City this season and was left out of their Champions League squad.
Toure’s agent, Dimitri Seluk, said the midfielder had been “humiliated” and Guardiola should apologise to him if City do not win the competition.
Guardiola said: “He must apologise. If he doesn’t, he won’t play.”
“It was so difficult for me to leave him (Toure) out of the Champions League squad,” added Guardiola. “I know him, he is a good guy.
“But the day after he (Seluk) spoke, he was out. Until he doesn’t speak, he is not going to play.”
Toure’s solitary appearance for City this season came in the Champions League qualifier second leg against Steaua Bucharest.
“If he wins the Champions League for City this season then I will travel to England and I will say on television that Pep Guardiola is the best manager in the world,” said Seluk.
“But if City don’t win the Champions League then I hope that Pep has got the balls to say that he was wrong to humiliate a great player like Yaya.
“Yaya is a professional and so he will do everything he is asked to do.
“Perhaps Pep will think he is good enough to play in the final 10 minutes of a League Cup game against a third division team – and, yes, I am joking.
With the player entering the final year of his £220,000 a week contract with City, he has no intention of leaving the club in January.
“But what I can tell you is that Yaya will spend the season at City,” he said. “He will not be leaving in January.”
Guardiola’s announcement comes on the day that Yaya Toure confirmed he would be retiring from international football.
Toure captained Ivory Coast to Africa Cup of Nations success in 2015, and made 102 appearances in 14 years for Les Elephants.
“After 14 years playing for Les Elephants I have decided to end my adventure playing for the Ivory Coast,” declared Toure, in a statement released on Tuesday.
“Some decisions are difficult to take but it is time to pass things on to other players.
“I thank all my supporters and my fans.”
